Authorities have always seeked to present as heretic
or
malevolent people led to riot because of poverty. This
song may not be about sabbath or witchcraft but tells
us of a celebration expressing popular anger withheld
for too long. Wolf, Fox and Hare may well be the soldier
the priest and the taxman.

AND RACE OF THE TARASCA

According to the legend , the Tarasca is a monster
who dwelt by the Rhone river. Saint Martha is said
to have tamed her, thus freeing the people.
During the celebrations which were dedicated to her, a
representation of the Tarasca
Spitting bengal fires from her nastrals and carried by
men would dance among the crowd , trying to knock down
people with her tail ; symbolising a non-dualistic world
where good and evil were one, loved as well feared, the
Tarasca is still very alive in the folk festivals of Tarascon,
and Tartarin has not replaced her. She is even part of
the Unesco immaterial world heritage.
The music which is played to the dance and which goes
back to the middle-age is also sung by grand-mothers to
grand children hopping on their lap.

THE SQUIRREL ( P.CONTE) AND THE COCONUTS
Oral tradition from the coast
Fecondity danse from the winter festivals, reminding
ancient Rome rituals : you play and dance to awaken strengths
which give beautiful babies and rich harvests.
Faces are painted black to hide from evils spirits and you
make a lot of noise to keep them avay. Coconuts beat the
rythm of this dance which , according to the legend , was
brought from Africa by the Moors. It can be compared with
the Barbaresca of Corsica, the fantasia of Berberes etc…

I twas known in ancient Egypt, made of calebasse
as the indian sitar. Similar instruments where used in
the Middle-ages in all of Europe an it is still found to
day in Turkey and eastern and middle Europe in different
shapes.
The marin-trumpet is a string instrument played with a bow
, giving the sustain on one or sometimes three strings.
It can be up to two meters high. The coppered sound. is
given by a mecanism similar to the one used on the hurdy-gurdy
. It is found as far back as the XII° centuryn |
